What Is Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone?

Optimized Battery Charging holds your iPhone at 80% and finishes the charge just before you normally unplug it. Lithium-ion cells degrade faster when held at 100%, so this reduces long-term wear. Why Sitting at 100% Is Bad for a Battery

Lithium-ion cells age fastest at high states of charge and high temperatures. A battery left at 100% overnight, every night, spends about a third of its life under exactly those conditions.

Optimized Battery Charging uses on-device learning to recognise your routine. If you consistently charge from 11pm and unplug at 7am, it charges to 80%, pauses, and completes the last 20% shortly before you wake. The battery spends one hour at full charge instead of eight.

Apple rates iPhone batteries at 80% of original capacity after 500 full cycles, or 1000 cycles on iPhone 15 and later. Reducing time at full charge measurably extends how long you stay above that line.

Finding and Controlling It

It is at Settings → Battery → Charging on recent iOS, or Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging on older versions. It is enabled by default.

When it is holding at 80%, the Lock Screen notification tells you when charging will finish. Long-press that notification and you can override it to Charge Now for the times you need a full battery before leaving.

iPhone 15 and later add a separate Charging Limit control with an 80% cap that never completes the charge at all. That is stricter and suits people who are always near a charger.

Why It Sometimes Does Nothing

It relies on a predictable routine, so it stays inactive when your schedule is irregular.

  • It needs to learn. Expect a couple of weeks of consistent charging before it starts engaging.
  • Location matters. It uses Significant Locations to distinguish home from elsewhere, so it typically will not engage in a hotel or at a desk it does not recognise.
  • Short charges are skipped. Topping up for an hour during the day does not trigger it.
  • It disables under alarms and travel in some cases, deliberately, so you are not caught short.
Different feature, similar name. Optimized Battery Charging protects the battery. Optimize iPhone Storage keeps full-resolution photos in iCloud. They are unrelated and people mix them up constantly.

Does a Full Phone Affect Battery Life?

Indirectly, and the effect is real but often overstated. A nearly full iPhone has no room for temporary files, so iOS works harder: apps relaunch more often, caches rebuild repeatedly, and background processes retry. That extra work costs battery.

A stalled iCloud sync is the more common version of this. A phone that cannot complete a photo upload will keep trying, which drains the battery noticeably and is usually blamed on the battery rather than storage.
