iCloud Private Relay is a privacy feature included with any paid iCloud+ plan. It hides your IP address and encrypts Safari browsing so that neither your network provider nor the websites you visit can build a profile from it. It is not a VPN, it only covers Safari and some unencrypted traffic, and it uses no meaningful storage.
How It Works
Private Relay splits your traffic across two separate relays so that no single party sees both who you are and where you are going.
- Your request leaves the device encrypted, with the destination hidden.
- The first relay, run by Apple, sees your IP address but not which site you requested.
- The second relay, run by an independent partner, sees the destination but not your IP address.
Because the two are operated by different organisations, neither Apple nor the partner can reconstruct your browsing. It is a genuinely well-designed privacy mechanism, and a narrower one than most people assume.
Turning It On
Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Private Relay and switch it on. You need an active iCloud+ subscription; the free 5 GB tier does not include it.
Under IP Address Location you get two choices. Maintain general location keeps regional accuracy so local search results and weather still work. Use country and time zone is broader and more private, at the cost of less relevant local results.
It applies per-network, so you can disable it on a specific Wi-Fi network that blocks it while leaving it on everywhere else.
What It Does Not Do
The limits matter, because Private Relay is frequently mistaken for a VPN.
- Safari only for web browsing. Chrome, Firefox, and in-app browsers are not covered.
- No region switching. You cannot use it to appear in another country, so it will not unlock geo-restricted streaming.
- No app traffic protection beyond unencrypted connections. Apps using HTTPS route normally.
- Not available everywhere. Several countries block it, and some corporate or school networks do too.
Does It Affect Storage or Speed?
Storage, no. Private Relay is a routing feature and stores nothing on your device, so it will not contribute to a full iPhone.
Speed, slightly. Traffic takes two extra hops, which adds latency you may notice on very fast connections and rarely notice on ordinary ones. Some websites also serve less accurate local content because your apparent location is coarser.
If a specific site misbehaves, turn Private Relay off for that network rather than disabling it globally.
