How Do I Share iPhone Photos Without Losing Quality?

What Each Method Does to Your Photo

• AirDrop — full original, including HEIC, Live Photo motion, and all metadata. Lossless.
• iCloud link sharing (Share → Copy iCloud Link) — full original, and works for recipients on any platform. The link expires after 30 days.
• iCloud Shared Albums — downscaled to roughly 2048 pixels on the long edge. Convenient, but not a way to send originals.
• Messages — compresses, though less brutally than most. Some quality is lost.
• WhatsApp — heavy compression by default. Send as Document to preserve the original.
• Instagram and Facebook — re-encode everything. Never treat these as a transfer method.
• Email — offers a size choice on send. Pick Actual Size.

The pattern is that anything built for social or messaging optimises for bandwidth, and anything built for file transfer preserves the file.

The Shared Album Misconception

This one catches a lot of people, because Shared Albums feel like the native Apple way to share photos with family. They are genuinely useful — they do not count against your iCloud storage, and up to a hundred people can subscribe.

But every photo is resized to about 2048 pixels on the long edge, which is roughly 4 megapixels against the 12 or 48 your camera captured. Fine on a phone screen, visibly soft printed or cropped.

Sending Originals to Non-Apple Recipients

Copy iCloud Link is the underused answer. Select photos in the Photos app, tap Share, then Copy iCloud Link. iOS uploads the originals and gives you a URL that works in any browser on any platform, with a download button for full-resolution files.

Alternatives that also preserve originals:

• Google Drive or Dropbox — upload from the share sheet and share the folder link.
• WeTransfer or similar — no account needed, good for one-off large batches.
• WhatsApp as Document — use the attach menu's Document option rather than Photos, and the file arrives uncompressed.

The HEIC Question

Originals from your iPhone are HEIC, which some Windows machines and older software cannot open. iOS usually handles this by converting automatically when it detects an incompatible destination, which is why most people never see the problem.

When you need to force it, set Settings → Apps → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic. Note that converting HEIC to JPEG is itself a lossy step, so use it only when compatibility genuinely requires it. More in our HEIC explainer.
