The fastest route is Settings → Apps → Messages → Keep Messages, switched from Forever to 30 Days or 1 Year. iOS then deletes everything older in one sweep and keeps doing so automatically. To clear individual threads instead, long-press a conversation in the Messages list and choose Delete, or use Edit → Select Messages to remove several at once.
The One Setting That Does the Most Work
Most people never change Keep Messages from its default of Forever, which means every text, photo, and video ever sent to them is still on the device. Changing it is a single switch and it applies retroactively.
- Open Settings → Apps → Messages. On iOS 17 and earlier this is just Settings → Messages.
- Scroll to Message History → Keep Messages.
- Choose 30 Days or 1 Year.
- iOS warns that older messages will be deleted. Confirm.
Delete Attachments Without Losing the Conversations
Text is tiny. A decade of pure text messages might be 200 MB. The space is entirely in attachments, and you can strip those while keeping every conversation intact.
Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages. You get a breakdown by category: Photos, Videos, GIFs and Stickers, Other. Tap any category to see items sorted largest first, then use Edit to select and delete. Videos are almost always the bulk of it.
The same screen offers Review Large Attachments, which pulls everything over a threshold across all conversations into one list. For most people this is the highest-yield five minutes in the whole Messages cleanup.
Deleting Individual Conversations
- One thread: swipe left on it in the conversation list and tap the trash icon, or long-press and choose Delete.
- Several threads: tap Edit (or the three dots on newer iOS) → Select Messages, tick each one, then Delete.
- Single messages inside a thread: long-press the bubble → More → tick the bubbles → trash icon.
Since iOS 16, deleted conversations land in a Recently Deleted folder for 30 days. Find it under Edit → Show Recently Deleted. Space is not actually reclaimed until you empty it, which trips a lot of people up.
If Messages Sync With iCloud
Check Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Messages in iCloud. If it is on, deletion propagates to every device signed into your Apple Account within a minute or two. Deleting a thread on your iPhone removes it from your iPad and Mac as well.

If Messages in iCloud is off, each device keeps its own independent copy and you will need to repeat the cleanup on each one.
How Much Space This Recovers
Messages is usually the third-largest category on an iPhone, behind photos and apps. Someone who has never pruned it and uses group chats heavily will commonly find 5–15 GB sitting in attachments. Light texters might find under 1 GB.
